Erica Synths Konstrukt-8 Is a DIY Drum Machine You Can Learn From
Erica Synths has announced the Konstrukt-8 - a modular Eurorack drum system that you build yourself from scratch. It is not just a kit, though. Each of the eight modules comes with a detailed build guide, and you can explore every circuit on a breadboard before soldering a single component. The idea is to understand what you are building, not just assemble it.

Four Analog Drum Voices
The heart of the Konstrukt-8 is four fully analog drum voices. The kick drum uses a resonant bridged-T network to produce deep, punchy low-end hits. The snare mixes a tuned resonator with filtered transistor noise for a sharp, crisp crack. The hi-hat combines six dissonant square-wave oscillators that are mixed, filtered, and overdriven to create metallic percussion tones. Finally, there is an FM drum voice, where two interacting oscillators let you cover everything from kicks and toms to bells and cymbal-like textures.
Sequencer, Mixer, and Effects
A four-channel drum sequencer lets you tap in rhythms that loop automatically, keeping things practical for live performance. All four voices feed into an output mixer with per-channel FX sends and a master insert point. Two effects modules round out the system: an analog bucket-brigade delay (BBD) that can work in both flanger and delay modes, and a diode-based compressor with sidechain capability - a surprisingly sophisticated addition for a beginner-to-intermediate kit.
Built for Learning
Erica Synths rates the Konstrukt-8 as intermediate in difficulty, and suggests that completing the full learning path takes around 6 to 8 weekends. That is a real time commitment, but the breadboard-first approach means you get a genuine understanding of each circuit before committing it to a PCB. It is an unusual combination of a serious musical instrument and an electronics course.

Two Versions Available
The Konstrukt-8 is available now in two versions. One includes just the eight module kits, while the other adds a Eurorack enclosure with an integrated power supply and 15 braided patch cables. Both versions include downloadable build guides for all eight modules. The finished system is fully Eurorack compatible, so the modules can later be used in a larger rack alongside other gear.
