Stylophone On-The-Fly: A Performance-First Sequencer with No Menu Diving

by Little Music

Dubreq has just announced the Stylophone On-The-Fly (OTF), a performance sequencer that challenges the traditional approach to pattern programming. Unveiled at NAMM 2026, this device promises to turn sequencing into a live, tactile experience where everything responds immediately.

Stylophone On-The-Fly Performance Sequencer

Built for Performance

The core philosophy behind the On-The-Fly is simple: no menus, no stopping, no waiting. Every control responds instantly, allowing you to shape patterns with rhythm, pitch, and performance variations while the sequence is running. This approach draws inspiration from legendary sequencers like the Korg SQ-1, prioritizing hands-on playability over complex navigation.

At its heart, the OTF features two instantly accessible patterns with 4 steps each, giving you 8 total steps to work with. Each step has dedicated pitch and duty controls, plus individual patch points. But the device doesn't stop there - you can expand into 16, 32, or 64-step sequences, and in loop mode, record up to 1,024 steps. Switch between 24 sequence memories on the fly, each storing its own per-step pitch and duty cycle information.

Real-Time Control

What sets the On-The-Fly apart is its performance-focused design. While the sequence plays, you can add glide, ratchets, rests, ties, or controlled randomness to individual steps. There's also per-step functions including skip, reset, and full control over sequence direction - forward, backward, or bounce modes - without breaking the groove.

Stylophone On-The-Fly Controls

The device includes a built-in quantizer with multiple scales: chromatic, major, minor, blues, byzantine, Raga Desh, and Akebono, plus a continuous mode. You can transpose on the fly from minus seven semitones to an octave above, making it easy to shift your patterns into different keys during performance.

Timing controls cover all the essentials - tempo, swing, lead and lag timing, note length, and gate length. Three memory banks (X, Y, Z) can store up to 8 sequences each, and a unique switch knob lets you chain patterns with preset combinations.

Connectivity Options

The On-The-Fly integrates into various setups with full Eurorack CV, Gate, Sync, and MIDI connectivity. There are dedicated gate outputs for each of the dual four-step sequencers, plus a summed gate out. The device includes gate switching between 5V and 10V options, MIDI in/out via TRS mini jacks, sync in/out ports, play/stop controls, CV input, and reset input.

Multiple units can be linked together for expanded multi-sequencer systems, making it possible to build complex modular setups that maintain the same hands-on, immediate control philosophy.

Part of the CPM Family

The On-The-Fly joins Dubreq's CPM (Compact, Portable Modular) family, which includes the DS-2 drone synth and DF-2 filter box. This growing ecosystem of compact, interconnectable devices shares a common design philosophy focused on portability and direct control.

The Stylophone On-The-Fly represents a refreshing approach to sequencing in an era where many devices hide their functions behind screens and menus. By putting every control at your fingertips and responding instantly to every change, it turns pattern programming into genuine performance. Whether you're building Eurorack patches, controlling MIDI gear, or creating hybrid setups, the OTF promises to keep you focused on making music rather than navigating interfaces.

Pricing and release date are yet to be announced, but Dubreq has opened a waitlist for those interested in staying updated on the On-The-Fly's launch.
