PeacockMedia MIDIKalimba: Touch-Sensitive MIDI Controller

by Little Music

PeacockMedia, the maker of the MIDIPan handpan-style controller, has created another unique MIDI instrument. MIDIKalimba brings the intuitive layout of a traditional kalimba into the digital music world. Unlike conventional grid-based controllers, it features an alternating pad arrangement that mirrors how a real thumb piano works.

Design and Layout

The controller has 11 main touch-sensitive pads arranged in the classic kalimba pattern, where the middle pad plays the root note and notes alternate left and right as you move outward. This layout makes it easy to play triads and chord progressions, as the notes for common chords (like 1-3-5 or 2-4-6) are positioned close together for simultaneous playing.

Two additional smaller pads on the sides handle looper controls, allowing you to record, playback, and layer musical ideas without interrupting your performance flow.

Features

The device offers velocity-sensitive playing, responding to both light taps and heavy strikes for expressive performance. You can configure any scale or mode (from Lydian to Locrian, plus major and minor pentatonics), change the root note and octave, and even flip the pad layout to suit your playing preference.

MIDIKalimba outputs MIDI over USB-C and MIDI over TRS (Type A/Korg standard, compatible with 5-pin DIN via adapter). It runs on any MIDI channel from 1 to 16 and can send program change messages to switch instruments on compatible modules.

Built-in Looper

The built-in looper lets you record loops, add layers, and change instruments mid-loop by switching MIDI channels. You can set a custom tempo with tap tempo or use the flashing count-in to stay in time. The octave can be changed on the fly while recording or playing along with your loop.

Calibration and Customization

A calibration tool helps optimize velocity response to your playing style and environment. You can adjust sensitivity settings to match your touch, whether you prefer lighter or heavier playing. The advanced menu also allows you to mirror the pad layout left-right, which may suit left-handed players or alternative playing techniques.

The latest firmware version supports bank change messages for even more instrument selection options on compatible MIDI modules. Future updates are planned to add audio output capabilities to the larger 11-pad design.

MIDIKalimba is available through the PeacockMedia website and selected retailers. The device is designed and manufactured in the UK by Shiela Dixon.
