Monkhum Mon2: Handcrafted Soundscape Machine From Thailand

by Little Music

The Mon2 Soundscape Machine is a unique 16-bit synthesizer that brings together six oscillators, a loop sampler, and extensive sound design tools in a compact, battery-powered package. Designed and crafted in Chiang Mai, Thailand, this device combines serious synthesis capabilities with distinctive DIY aesthetics.

Three Synthesizers in One Box

The Mon2 divides its six oscillators into three groups (A, B, and C), with two oscillators per group. Each group can adjust its parameters independently, which essentially gives you three synthesizers working together. You can mix and layer sounds in creative ways using the vertical screen interface that displays three parameters at all times.

The device offers 30 different waveforms including sine, triangle, square, and noise. Each oscillator group has its own volume control, envelope settings (attack and release), and distortion parameters. The interface uses three knobs that correspond to the parameters shown on the screen, with a locking system to prevent accidental changes.

Voice Mode and Chord Mode

The Mon2 operates in two primary modes. Voice mode allows you to create independent sounds on each group, treating them as separate synthesizers. Chord mode transforms the device into a chord generator, where you can select from 84 different chord types across 12 root notes, including major, minor, 7th, major 7th, minor 7th, 9th, and minor 9th chords.

In chord mode, the manual explains that the A group handles notes 2, 4, and 6 of the chord, while B takes notes 1, 3, and 5. This arrangement creates rich harmonic textures that you can further shape with the modulation and effects sections.

Modulation and Effects

The modulation section includes LFO, tremolo, slide up/down functions, and drum synthesis capabilities. Each modulation type has 14 different waveforms to choose from. The frequency modulation sync feature helps you create rhythmic patterns by linking the modulation speeds together with multiplier values.

Effects include a low-pass filter for tone shaping, echo for creating space and depth, and distortion across all three oscillator groups. You can also add sub-oscillators to thicken the sound. All these parameters can be controlled via CV inputs if you want to integrate the Mon2 with modular systems.

Loop Sampler and Recording

The built-in loop sampler can record up to 40 seconds total across 12 WAV files. You can record on three separate channels, with each oscillator group having two recording slots (A1/A2, B1/B2, C1/C2). The recording interface uses touch buttons with a swipe gesture for navigation.

There's also a pitch loop function that records knob movements, creating evolving soundscapes. The manual describes this as separate from the main pitch control, with its own recording, playback, and stopping functions indicated by different LED colors.

Sync, MIDI, and CV Control

For synchronization with other gear, the Mon2 offers sync in/out connections. In master mode, it divides the main record loop timing and sends out sync signals at various subdivisions from 1/2 to 1/256. In slave mode, it receives external sync to lock with your other equipment.

USB-C connectivity provides both power and MIDI communication. The device supports three independent MIDI channels and can load Pure Data patches for extended functionality. CV inputs let you control oscillator frequency, waveform selection, modulation depth, filter cutoff, and chord selection.

Craft Aesthetics and Battery Power

The Mon2 features stainless steel plates combined with premium silicone rubber buttons that the designers call "Monkhum's Button." The vertical screen layout creates a unique workflow that's different from traditional synthesizers. The button spacing matches MIDI keyboard keys, making finger placement comfortable for musicians.

The device measures 110×110×35mm and runs on 9V batteries or USB-C power, making it truly portable. This combination of handcrafted design and battery operation gives it a DIY aesthetic while maintaining professional build quality.

Random Steps and Shortcuts

The Mon2 includes a random step function that can work across infinity steps or fixed 8-step patterns. Combined with the frequency modulation sync, this creates generative sequences that evolve over time.

The interface also features shortcut keys for faster workflow. For example, holding shift gives you quick access to main volume, tempo adjustment for existing loops, and random function timing. Holding clear plus another button provides direct access to main pitch adjustment.

The Mon2 offers a fresh approach to portable synthesis, combining flexible sound design tools with an unconventional interface. Its battery operation and compact size make it suitable for mobile music making, while the depth of synthesis options keeps it interesting for sound design exploration.
